Urban granularities - a data structure for cognitively ergonomic route directions

This paper addresses the specification of a data structure for route directions that incorporates essential aspects of cognitive information processing. Specifically, we characterize levels of urban granularity and the hierarchical organization of spatial knowledge. We discuss changes of granularity in route directions that result from combining elementary route information to higher-order elements (so called chunking). ∗Corresponding author: Alexander Klippel.
